I categorically disagree with the author. This article uses learned sources to create an academic argument against the very emotional state of Europeans who wish to provide refuge and succor to the Ukrainians fleeing their country. Everything she discounts as racist is in fact the way Europeans assess the plight of the Ukrainians. Male refugees arriving in Europe from Afghanistan, Syria and other countries at war may be in fact economic migrants so a careful refugee status determination is needed for each individual each HCR on European soil. Or they may be considered as prima facie refugees if they claim asylum in their neighbouring countries. Ukrainians are prima facie refugees arriving in neighbouring European states. Geography and law are important aspects which the author doesn’t consider, or consider sufficiently. Furthermore it’s total rubbish to see Ukrainian men as expendable weapons of war, they are doing what needs to be done to save their country against national external aggression and make it safe for their womenfolk and children to return. The author appears to denigrate their action. En plus, religion IS important. Not all migrants and/or refugees are terrorists but the great majority of terrorists operating in Europe are Muslim, so it’s natural to be wary of them. As yet, we have no Russian Wagner Group mercenaries claiming asylum in Europe, mingling with the refugees in order to perpetrate terrorist attacks in European countries but, as Christians easily allowed in, they could do that (God or Putin forbid). Lastly, Russian nationals - the supposed evil ‘other’ - seeking asylum in Europe would have to go through RSD procedures but would be likely to be viewed sympathetically if found to be in fear of their lives due to their political opinions. Let’s not forget that refugee law was built to accommodate exactly this scenario of European refugees 80 years ago. And western countries collectively give more and make more effort to facilitate the hosting of refugees in their neighbouring countries, precisely because they recognize the generosity - but lack of capacity - of those countries to host their fellow ethnic, religious ‘look-alike’ neighbours.
Oh dear, academia has a lot to account for muddled thinking or putting up ‘moral equivalence’ arguments that don’t consider human emotion and empathy for people who ‘look like us’. The author damns Europeans if they do or if they don’t.
